Possible Causes For Your Gun Safe Not Opening

Gun safes for the home must function effectively just in case you need to use your rifle on short notice. It would be frustrating for a gun safe to jam or fail to open when you really need to use your pistol. Unfortunately, it might take months or years to realize that your gun safe has a problem and won't open. But what would be the reason for this problem? Well, read on to find out.

Dead Batteries

Before you panic that your safe has a major problem, when was the last time you checked the batteries? Well, most folks forget to change their batteries, and they'll only realize their batteries need replacing after their safes fail to open. You see, batteries also expire, and once they do, they can no longer function.

You'll need to ensure the batteries have enough amperage to open the safe's electric lock. So, if the lock fails to open, you should try replacing the batteries before calling a locksmith. Also, don't just use any batteries. Use the recommended brand to avoid frustrations.

Faulty or Old Lock

An aging or faulty lock will also present problems when opening gun safes. You'll notice that opening the lock takes a lot of time and effort. Even worse, these issues cause your safe not to open. Unfortunately, you can do nothing other than call a locksmith or safe specialist to examine the lock.

The locksmith can repair the lock and restore its normal function. On the other hand, if the lock is irreparable, you'll have to replace it. Luckily, your locksmith can help replace the aging or faulty lock at a fair price.

Wrong Combination

Most folks can go for months without opening their gun safes. As such, it's pretty easy to forget your safe's combination. And as you know, no safe will open with the wrong combination. So, if you can't recall your combination codes, you should call a locksmith specializing in safes to help you out. The locksmith will reset your lock or work with your manufacturer to gain access. They'll also help program a new combination.

Lockout Mode

Assuming you have keyed the wrong combination code several times, your safe will activate its lockout mode. As long as the safe is on lockout mode, it won't open despite keying in the correct combination code. You'll have to wait for a few minutes for the safe to deactivate the lockout mode. You should wait a few minutes more before trying to key in the codes again to avoid lengthening the lockout mode.
